It Just Doesn't Seem Right

I’m writing these words on January 20. Winter. 48 of the 50 states had snow on the ground last week. Today, our high temperature is to be 81 degrees. Even though I grew up in warm, sunny California, I lived in Yankeeland long enough for my mind to still have a bit of difficulty grasping “January” and “81 degrees.” However, I can assure you, I’m not complaining!

It occurs to me that there are, at times, words and attitudes and actions in the lives of Christians that, too, seem to be a bit out of place. For example, it just doesn’t seem right...

--For a Christian to begin a conversation with
the words, “Now, don’t repeat this, but I
heard...”

--For a Christian to come to worship, not
participate, and then complain, “I just don’t get
anything out of ‘church.’”

--For a Christian to prefer the company of her
associates at work rather than the company of
her brethren.

--For a Christian to question whether a
carpenter from Nazareth could possibly have
the final word about faith and conduct.

--For a Christian not to provide an example for
his children of the importance of being in Bible
class on Sunday and Wednesday.

--For a Christian to be embarrassed to read
their Bible in public or pray in public or to
walk away from gossip or turn the channel
from filth.

Think about that last one just a bit. “I’m not ashamed of the gospel,” said Paul. I hope that’s true of all of us; that we’re not embarrassed by what God says about worship, marriage, divorce, righteousness, parenting, finances, fellowship. No apologies. Not embarrassed to live it, teach it, and let it be known by others that I believe it. Anything less “just doesn’t seem right.”
