Why were you told your baptism did not count? The concern is not your sincerity, but whether it matched the baptism Scripture describes: a believer immersed for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3–4; Acts 22:16).
This Is Not a Verdict on Your Heart
This is not a judgment on your heart. Scripture distinguishes sincere faith from incomplete teaching. In Ephesus, disciples who had received John’s baptism were taught more fully and then “baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 19:3–5).
What Scripture Asks of Every Baptism
The New Testament consistently joins baptism with three things: personal faith and repentance, immersion in water, and God’s promised purpose. “Repent and be baptized … for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38).
Baptism is pictured as burial and resurrection with Christ (Romans 6:3–4), as putting on Christ (Galatians 3:27), and as an appeal to God through Christ’s resurrection (1 Peter 3:21). Ananias told Saul, “Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name” (Acts 22:16).
Scripture does not make the building, the congregation’s name, the baptizer’s credentials, or the amount of prior Bible knowledge the standard. The issue is whether the response matched what Christ taught.
Paul Faced This Exact Question
Acts 19 answers the question directly. These disciples were sincere and had already been baptized, but their baptism was based on an earlier message. After Paul explained Jesus, they were baptized in the Lord’s name (Acts 19:1–5).
What You Can Do Next
Read the conversion accounts and ask: What does the text say baptism is for, and what did people do when they understood? In Acts, they responded without delay (Acts 2:41; 8:35–38; 16:30–33; 22:16).
If your earlier baptism did not match that pattern, being immersed for the forgiveness of sins is not erasing sincere faith. It is acting on clearer understanding, just as the disciples did in Acts 19.
Take Your Time with It
Read Acts 2, Acts 8, Acts 19, Acts 22, Romans 6, Galatians 3, and 1 Peter 3. Ask hard questions and test every claim by Scripture (Acts 17:11). You deserve an answer grounded in God’s word.
